PCOS And Its Connection To Diabetes

May 8, 2017

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS, as it is popularly known, is one of the most commonly found hormonal conditions in women, especially during their late adolescence and menopausal years. PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility, irregular periods, and would you believe it, diabetes.

What Causes PCOS to Lead To Diabetes?

The cause for PCOS is yet to be discovered, but it has been medically proven that women with PCOS develop high insulin resistance, which then leads to the development of type 2 diabetes. Insulin is a major factor in controlling the glucose levels in the body. When the body becomes aware of the fact that insulin made by it isn’t working as well as it should, the pancreas create additional insulin, which disrupts glucose levels in the body. This leads to the development of type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and pre-diabetes.

Many experts agree that PCOS is also related to body weight, and it can be seen that most women with PCOS tend to be overweight. For such women, it is advisable to get themselves checked for symptoms of diabetes as most of the time it goes undiagnosed resulting in further health risks.
