5 Daily Habits To Prevent Acid Reflux

May 21, 2017

Did you know that making simple changes to your daily habits can work wonders in reducing the symptoms of acid reflux? Read on to find out more.

Adjust your Meals

Eating large quantities of processed foods and sugars is bad for acid reflux. These foods should be replaced with organic foods, vegetables and probiotics such as yoghurt. Another easy-to-implement advice is to replace processed salt in your diet with unprocessed salt, such as Himalayan salt.

Eat Slowly

Eating slowly can also help bring down acid reflux. Chew every mouthful thoroughly. It will ensure that your food is broken down to a smaller and simpler form that is easily digestible. This won’t aggravate the stomach and neither will it push acid back up into the food pipe.

Avoid Trigger Foods

People with acidity have a long list of food items that they should avoid. For example, coffee and other caffeinated products can make acidity worse. Fizzy drinks, alcohol, citrus drinks, chocolate, and spicy foods are also likely to trigger acid reflux.

Eat Regularly

Eating short meals can be very helpful for those who experience acid reflux on a regular basis. Aim to eat 5 times a day in smaller portions, rather than stuffing yourself with heavy food 2-3 times a day.

Sleep Well

Try and get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every day. Your sleeping position is also important.  For example, studies have found that sleeping on the right hand side is bad for acid reflux, whereas sleeping on the left side is better. If you are napping, try and sit upright while you do so.

Stop Smoking

A study has shown that those who smoke are more vulnerable to acid reflux as compared to those who don’t. Nicotine can cause acid in the stomach to move up and cause a burning sensation. If you’re trying to give up the habit, do it now and skip dealing with avoidable consequences.
