Type 2 Diabetes Questions

Is beetroot juice helpful for diabetics?

Dec 9, 2016

Is beetroot juice helpful for diabetics also? Or they should avoid it?

Diabetics can indeed have beet root juice, preferably in moderation (on alternate days, for instance). Although it is sweet in taste, it has a GI or glycemic index of 64, which puts it in the middle range. Glycemic index measures by how much a particular food raises your blood sugar levels, with pure sugar being measured at 100. Beets are rich in minerals and nitrates, so they have the ability to bring down blood pressure. So if you suffer from episodes of hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar or hypotension or low blood pressure, you should be careful having beet juice. Since it improves exercise performance, meaning it leaves you less winded or fatigued at the end of a work out, it can help diabetics exercise better.
